It is currently very fashionable for reporters to write about Artificial Intelligence and they make it sound like it is magic. My contention is that it is not.
I think the first thing to look at when reading anything that mentions Artificial Intelligence is to check whether the writer has defined what Artificial Intelligence is. In my experience this is not the case for almost all articles/news stories/etc. and there are so many definitions of Artificial Intelligence that unless the writer says what it is that they are writing about then I don’t think it’s possible to assess whether what they’ve written has merit.
The other thing that I would assess is whether the article/new story/etc. is a re-write of a press release.
Companies seem to me to be sending press releases with ‘AI’ in the title in order to get media coverage and the very fact that they feel the need to do this suggests to me that whoever has decided to send out the press release does not have confidence that their product is good enough to sell itself without significant external help.
If there was a program that could (for instance) confidently eliminate all unwanted email messages then you’d know about it without the need for a news story to be written about it.
