One thing about scam emails is that they are sent to thousands of people but appear to be personal. This is because the email doesn’t say how many people it has been sent to.
If you received a letter that appeared to address your current circumstances (e.g. if it offered to sell you socks just at the time that you were running out of socks) you might imagine that the people that sent it knew about your situation – but if the letter mentioned that it had been sent to ten thousand people then you would know that it was a co-incidence that you had received it at the ‘right’ time.
Scam emails are the same. Many thousand are sent but due to the absence of transparency they can appear to be targeted. It is difficult to remember that they never are. The scammers rely on a small number of people responding. My advice is not to open any email messages unless you are already expecting them. It isn’t always easy to resist that temptation, but it is the safest option.
