I often want to copy a link into a social media update or an email or something similar. It is tempting to right click on a link, select ‘copy link’ (or similar) and then paste it into some text.
However..
I strongly recommend taking a bit of extra time and [1] copying the link into a text editor (e.g. Notepad) and [2] testing the link before pasting it.
If the link is redirecting you to a second website (e.g. twitter and facebook links) then I recommend pasting the address of the new website into your message. You can copy this from the address bar of your Internet Browser after the target website is displayed.
If a link has a question mark in it and then one or more NAME = VALUE bits of information then you can delete most (potentially, all) of these and the link will still work.
If a link is in this format http(s)://[domain name]?NAME1=VALUE1&NAME2=VALUE2&NAME3… then everything after the ? is potentially telling the website’s backend something about you and can be deleted for the purposes of telling someone else about it.
